Home modifications are any alterations made to your home, apartment or condo that make it more livable and accessible. For the elderly, a major concern is the thought of having to leave their home because they may no longer be able to live independently. Moving will disrupt their daily lives. A recent AARP survey found that more than 80% of seniors wanted to stay in their own homes for the rest of their lives.

Continuing to live at home while we age is often called “aging in place.” The term generally means living where you have lived for many years and using products, services and conveniences that prevent you from having to move as circumstances change.

Aging in place is preferred by most seniors for many very important reasons:

  • A sense of security in an environment within which they feel safe
  • Feelings of independence, self-sufficiency, familiarity and comfort
  • Proximity to family
  • Convenience to community events and buildings—church, shopping, recreation, etc…

However, as people age, sometimes their physical abilities fail and it becomes difficult, or even impossible, to stay in their homes without some changes or modifications to the home to make it more livable and safely accessible. Modifications may also be necessary if you are disabled.
